Thanks for the coverage Black Xero!

Thanks! But right now I'd say nice "morning"

thanks for the update, but I just have one question: how exactly are the skins to be judged? from what i see, it's based on overall downloads by unique wincustomize users, but wouldn't that give those skins that are submitted earlier and unfair advantage? i believe you should instead judge the skins by taking the highest download count of a single day for each of the skins, instead of downloads overall...

anyway, just my thoughts.
on Aug 30, 2005
I also believe that overall downloads by unique users is not fair, but for an entirely different reason. I have downloaded all of the new cursors but for various reasons, am not using any of them because I don't like them. So now, I wish I could 'un-download' them so my 'vote' does not count.

cool i'm in third. thanx for the coverage.
on Aug 30, 2005
how can u make a link to your skin or skins. i mean i know how o make a link when i make a comment but when i make a skin, i want to do that.

i see Cavan1 do it, sometimes other people too, and i what to do the same thing.

NOTE: if you don't get what i mean here's a clue some of Cavan1's skins say "Enjoy. Visit my gallery LINK"

i can't do that link in the description part of the skin.. How can i do it?

it's based on overall downloads by unique wincustomize users

and
I also believe that overall downloads by unique users is not fair

Okay but the Official Rules say:

The Judges:
The judges of this event will be the WinCustomize community members.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place skins of each category with the highest download count by registered users will be the winners.

And as far as you are concerened with the early submission advantage, again you are probably wrong again. At the start of compition, Split by SoliD_NuTs was second in CXP Category, now it is nowehere as better skins with better useability came and.

And remember: if there are thousand people there would be thousan voices so it is impossible hear every voice.

Just to clear some of the points made.

> The reason why we're using the Registered Users Download Count instead of the overall D/L count is because registered users are part of the WC community and not 'drive-by' visitors.
> In order to determine a winner based on a single day download count, all entries would have to be uploaded and accepted at a precise time in order to have the same running time on the contest.

The way I set the contest was to give each contestant's entry a chance to get noticed and downloaded. Keep in mind that not all registered users log every day. Running the contest for 2 weeks gives each entry enough time to get downloaded by those who couldn’t/didn’t log on the first days.

On another note, I want to again thank the sponsors for their help and support, the moderators for the fine job they are doing and Black Xero for the constant updates of the contest. And to the participants that are putting out some really good work.

~Please just respect Apocalype's rules and decisions whether you think its fair or not. I know everyone wants to win. Lets just say thankyou to him for engineering the event and try to just make it fun. There will be other contests. And black Xero for keeping us informed and I have enjoyed all the cursors, logons and bootskins so far..kinda bummed about Solid Nutz though..I think his cursor is awesome. Hopefully by the end of the contest all members have had a chance to log in to see all the good stuff..I've enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one.

~Offer suggestions for the "next" contest...start a new thread when this ones over.

I think the rules are fair. That they were posted quite a while ago, so everyone knew how it was going to work.

To be honest I tried to use some strategy in my submission, knowing the rules. I wasn't too worried about being a day or two late, but realized that many registered users would get several, if not all, of the entries in a category (like robynjh's comment#4). The winning skins will be the ones that got more users to download them while at the same time neglecting to download the competition. With that in mind I used an image that is somewhat striking and conspicuous in a gallery list. I also hoped to maximize my time on the "front page" by submitting on a Sunday afternoon rather than Fiday (not to mention I hadn't finished working on my entry till then anyway).

I also thought that in the CXP category in particular a winning-the-contest-oriented strategy would be to spend a lot of time on the preview image. The preview that catches the eye and gets that extra click to the details page has probably scored a download.

So, I hope no one thinks me sneaky for considering these things. I've always liked exploring the consequences of rules in games and things--big part of the fun if you ask me. The rules to me seem very fair. It would be hard to make a more equitable contest that depended on the community (while excluding drive bys and potential false hits) instead of a panel of judges.

rabidrobot, your strategy is right on the money. On these type of contest you need to use everything to your advantage (without cheating of course )
And as you've mentioned, some key elements to consider are:
-Timing. Uploading on days with heavier traffic gives you a better chance of downloads.
-The Theme. Choosing a theme/image that appeal to the greater groups increases your chances of winning. And last...
-Presentation. The better you present your work (preview image) the more it will be noticed and relatively the more chances of people downloading it.

All this things are part of the competition and it's what makes it fun
on Aug 30, 2005
never mind comment #6. i got it covered out.
on Aug 30, 2005
now it is nowehere as better skins with better useability came and.

i'm hoping that was not a direct insult of the man's work.

I apologize if I sounded like I was ranting against the rules, and i completely respect all that you guys have done to put together this competition.

Running the contest for 2 weeks gives each entry enough time to get downloaded by those who couldn’t/didn’t log on the first days

i was merely pointing out that if a skin was released, for instance, on the last day of the competition, many people who do not visit this site on a daily basis would miss that skin and would not get a chance to download it and therefore submit their "vote".
But as I said, it's your contest, so you may do as you please, and i respect you guys just for putting together this thing.

On a side note, i don't think i'll be entering this particular contest, although im currently working on a very extensive icon pack, by far the most ambitious skin i've undertaken (right now its at almost 200 unique icons!)that I might be able to release in time for the other contest... it's planned for the end of september, isn't it?

Anyway, I always enjoy contests like these, since it really brings out the best skins people have to offer, and i'll be looking forward to see what people have in store in the coming weeks, and thanks guys for making things like this possible
