Even after a decade She still retains her charm

August 24, 1995 was the day when Microsoft released its first true GUI based Operating System named as Windows 95. Windows 95 spread like a jungle fire and within two post-release months, over one million "registered" copies were sold and pirated ones are even un-countable.

Although, speaking in terms of real numbers, Windows 95 accounts for just over one percent of the Windows client operating environment installed base total today but Microsoft's officials have admitted that one of their biggest challenges in continuing to grow the company's Windows business is the impression among some of its installed base that older Windows versions are good enough. Check out any of a number of Windows support forums and it is readily apparent there are still lots of Windows 95 die-hards out there.

I know I found Win95 to be outstanding when it first arrived. It was an incredible improvement over 3.1. Today however I would hope the only holdouts are those who simply can't upgrade their machine to XP since XP is a giant leap above 95.

However since the holdouts didn't upgrade to XP, I certainly don't see them upgrading to Vista unless they buy a new machine.

I agree Windows 95 was good in its day but think its well past its sell by date I wouldn't ever go back to using it or Win98. In terms of security using the OS is like having sex with out protection - seriously though Windows XP as security flawed as it is - is still better than its earlier versions JMO !

Can't understand why some one wouldnt go out and by XP at the price it is today being the best its been in a while.

hmm yes Jafo has a point ! - Windows 3.1 1.1 etc could be classed as having a 'GUI' sic graphical user interface - think what the thread should have read is that Windows 95 wasn't an OS that was ran under DOS as the earlier versions were. eg, a DOS program running a shell ? Windows 95 etc that came later ran not in a DOS shell but in their own enviroment keeping DOS there but hidden.
