Eweek's Approach
Published on August 2, 2005 By Black Xero In WinCustomize News
As Windows Vista Beta 1 released, the word-war started whether Microsoft has copied Apple's Tiger techonologies or not. Some say that Microsoft has copied, they give examples of similarity in icons, presentation system approach, and icon naming, and some say that Microsoft has not copied but improved, they quote the examples of features like virtual folders, network presentation and search as you type.

Eweek has done a comparision of both operating systems and result came out in form of a very detailed and useful article.

When Windows Vista ships in late 2006, Windows will mimic many features of Apple's Tiger and go beyond it. But while Microsoft introduces the world to Vista, Apple is keeping mum about its next version of Mac OS X, which Steve Jobs has said will ship at about the same time as Vista. It is the Intel-ready Leopard, not Tiger, that will be Apple's answer to Windows Vista.

With an ever increasing demand on OS developers to be innovative and implement practicability with convenience, I don't think it's so much a matter of MS copying Apple or visa versa, but more a case of developing upon an generalised idea, based on the feedback and needs of users, third party software developers, etc. If an idea to better access files or improve security is put out there, both MS and Apple will embrace that general concept and develop it to their own advantage, using their own ideas, names and additions to call it their own

Similarities will exist in MS and Apple products because both are working within similar environments and striving towards similar goals, to appease the users who demand improved technologies within their OS of choice.

Whilst I do not contribute to the OS wars (for or against any), I find related articles informative, just the same.

And Jafo, you really crack me up: "One day they'll run out of cat species....and it'll be....'Apple flea-bag mongrel' Maybe it will rain cats and dogs before this OS war is over

I agree with starkers, after all there's only so many ways to draw shiny 3D buttons on a 2D screen. More significant to me are the differences or the similarities found "under the hood", and from the looks of it, seems like Vista is going much further than Tiger (or Leopard or whatever other feline species ), especially when it comes to file storage and management. Then again I think this should've been done years ago. Besides, seems to me like both OS's are putting too much emphasis on looks and not enough on the "engine" - I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why WinFS got the boot.

I don't really care what came first. As long as it works and is useful I'm happy.
The thing is though, if they, any of them, where to only include stuff that thay came up with them self they'd have the same bunch complaining about feature x is not included and that they should have included it because company y has it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

I could never understand why steve Jobs has never written a OS that would compete directly with Windows.
Surely there would be enough folk on the planet so fed up with Microsoft they would jump ship.
The Aplle - Dell deal, if it goes through, will see a OS X for PC but port the Mac system to the PC has a lot of problems.
What is needed is a whole new OS.
The open source world would embrace it and software would quickly be available.

I just woke and that dream ended

Yup it sure seems like a ripped off from apple tiger...
I am currentlly playing around with the Beta 1,
I feel quite dissapointed,
It just seems like they took Windows XP integrated WindowBlinds and fancy icons, a bit of system reconsruction...
And what do you get?
Windows XP 2
Nothing new at all!!!

aquabelic...Beta 1 is a bare bones version and does not include many of the feature to be included in Beta 2, let alone the final release of Vista......so obviously, if you're looking for all the whistles and bells, you're going to be disappointed and give an unqualified opinion based on that emotion.

And just because the Mac OS got pushed out there first, it doesn't mean that MS has copied anything. Vista/Longhorn has been on the drawing board for quite some time, as was Tiger, and both companies had access to what had become common knowledge regarding new inclusions in each OS. I'm sure there's a few software developers out there who could say: "Hey, we had that idea first!", but that idea may have been considered in one form or another by someone else....

Regardless of any negative opinion at this time, I will upgrade to Vista when the full version arrives, but on the same hand, I would not be opposed to giving the Mac OS a try on a dual boot system when it comes to Intel powered PC proper.

Well I think it does 'feel' like MacOS Tiger - a little anyway. But I dont think this should be regarded as a dissapointment in development but its a development of an Operating System that combines all the features people have been asking for for years. If it does feel at all like Tiger what with the icons and indexing search features and all its really because we requested this from microsoft some time back this is really just the realisation of those requests and more to come.

"longhorn" was originally slated for release in 2002... But Microsoft did not have enought time... So what we got instead was "Whistler," better known as Windows XP.

gimme a break, apple is jealous of MS and they have stuck too many ipods where the sun don't shine. if they hanvet done so they need to. it would be alot healthier for them.

apple JUST NOW releases multi button mice, after how long?????

I think apple is also spoiling teens and youths with that stupid "hip" image that is ever so ick. Like seeing an mtv Veejay or whatchaya call it say that minivans are cool. yuckerz!
