It's official—Apple Computer Inc. has released the long-awaited, much-speculated-upon OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system, an upgrade to the current OS X, complete with a smattering of bells and whistles.

Apple says that its new OS, Mac OS X version 10.4, or Tiger, contains more than 200 new features and applications. The highlights are Spotlight, a desktop search technology; and Dashboard, a new way to access information using widgets. The OS also allows for videoconferences with other Tiger users.

Pros:
New Finder features; better interface responsiveness and overall speed, even on legacy hardware; Safari includes improved performance and RSS; QuickTime 7.0 offers higher-resolution video; new Automator allows systemwide scripting; Core Data and Core Image open up new opportunities to developers; better cross-platform compatibility.

Cons.
Most upgrades are hidden under the hood; features the average user will notice, such as Mail, clash with Apple's own user interface design; some features are unavailable on hardware older than a year or two.

Vorsavhit: LOL! your argument is valid to a limited extent only! I'm a Windows user, right. I've been forced to use Mac OS X for 2 or 3 months at college for some computing class and lemme tell you something: I kept changing computers thru that term because they were all falling to pieces, refused to boot, the browsing experience was terrible, none was behaving adequately, everything was so slow... So it all boils down to the quality of the computer's administrator: you sure were a poor Windows administrator (or had a bad experience because you had specific needs MS may not have put enough development resources into).
My point is that you'll always have more options with Windows and in that may lie the problems poor administrators have because they misuse the OS. MAC OS is more like a kid's toy, it comes with extra protection and a lot of "you can't do's".

Eroticus Prime: make sure you document yourself. It's sad to read that "Longhorn's features are looking more like XP's", sad people get committed to spreading untruths! You should understand that the press never gives you a comprehensive view but a limited one. There's a whole lot more beyond WinFS in Longhorn. Besides it'll go beta shortly after Longhorn is released. Well anyway your last 2 paragraphs take all credit out of your intervention.

Now if the title was Tiger Unleashed on Intel Platforms...

that would mean something.

As it is, Tiger means a great deal only to Apple users.

Beta/alpha are terms meaning that they are still being tested before there will be an official release. Why argue symantecs when you know what someone means? he said that microsoft is making "incremental regressions." Explain how that isn't flaming, because there is no shred of evidence there are any regressions. And where do you see that he said feature set anywhere? Therefore my comment on the screenshots article is relevant.

And why do people like you always take the chance to argue over who should have been president and who shouldn't. I said flip-flopper John Kerry because everyone knows what that means. It means it's someone who constantly changes their mind. What does that have to do with bringing politcs into it? It's a friggin' term for christ sake.

Yee-haawww!

If by flip-flopping you mean thinking of going to war was good when we had a valid reason then realizing this whole WMD crap was a lie and thinking maybe we shouldnt have gone to war over Bush's lie. I just got out of the Army. I was in Iraq. I remember the day they told us the war was being called 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' and my confusion that this had nothing to do with "weapons of mass destruction'. I was pissed. Sure...Kerry's the bad guy though........

politics don't need to be brought into this

Oh yeah, and republicans suck.

You nailed it TexasJoe

Upgraded to 10.2 tonight. Big waste of 129 bucks. This entire upgrade can be sumed up as "pritty but useless" Not only that they took all the i Apps out of the OS, except iTunes, so if you do a fresh install you lose them all. And have to buy iLife if you want iPhoto or iMovie. for an adtional $79 bucks....

you got it mormegil, Tiger is nothing but a Service Pack that Apple charges you the price of a full upgrade. With Windows you get that stuff for free. I sure feel bad for y'all who use Apple's OS and have to pay big bucks for their service packs!

Why argue symantecs when you know what someone means?

Because you were acting like you were right about everything, which I wanted to prove wasn't the case.

Explain how that isn't flaming, because there is no shred of evidence there are any regressions.

Gee, removing what was going to be an integral part of Longhorn, WinFS, isn't regressing at aaaaaall, is it?
And it's not flaming simply because he didn't attack Microsoft, he merely pointed out something he'd observed to be the case, which I also agree with.

And where do you see that he said feature set anywhere?

I read it as being implied. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

It's a friggin' term for christ sake.

Yes, it is a term. A political term, as 'twere.

TexasJoe, Essencay, whoever else, those things needed to be said. It's that simple. Maybe it wasn't the right time or place, but they did need to be said.

I beg to differ. I would say the equivalent of Microsoft's service packs would be Apple's 10.x.x releases, for example, 10.3.1 all the way to 10.3.9, which not only fix security and bugs as service packs do, but also add features, something only XP SP2 has done so far. (And Apple has released 9 since late 2003, to Microsoft's pathetic 2 since 2001.)
There's a huge amount of under the hood updates and new features in Tiger as the original news topic suggests, but having not used it yet it's not worth me getting into.

I respectlfully disagree. Paul Thurrott who I trust to be an unbiased journalist wrote in his review: "Apple Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" is the strongest OS X release yet and a worthy competitor to Windows XP. Though it is marketed by Apple as a major release, Tiger is in fact a minor upgrade with few major new features for end users (though developers will be interested in some of the low-level work Apple has done with Core Image, Core Audio, and other technologies. That won't stop Apple fans from flocking to Apple Stores on April 29 and standing in line to buy it, even at its inflated $129 price."

WinFS, again, will ship some time later, after Longhorn is released. This is so for legitimate reasons, like to not delay Longhorn's release to public any further than Holiday 2006. I wouldn't personally want MS to announce a release some time in 2007, because then it may take another 12 months. They locked the schedule on December 2006 (as the latest). I read October 2006 on Paul Thurrott's website.

Gee, sounds like a contradiction here. Maybe I was wrong in calling him a hipocrite... Seems that whenever someone gives an opinion that suits your case everything is fine, but when someone says something you don't agree with they must act "like you were right about everything."

Gee, removing what was going to be an integral part of Longhorn, WinFS, isn't regressing at aaaaaall, is it?

Why do you even keep bringing this up? he said nothing about it in his comment, so why are you trying to prove me wrong about something i havn't talked about?
on May 03, 2005
Omfg, are you a moron? I've lost all patience with you now. You said there was no evidence of regression. The removal of WinFS is a prime piece of evidence.
on May 03, 2005
OK, folks .... a bit more of 'argue the debate' and a bit less of 'attack the debater', thanks....
