Betanews.com reports that Microsoft has offered a colossal bid for acquisition of Yahoo.

Microsoft's official statement headlined as

"Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has made a proposal to the Yahoo! Inc. Board of Directors to acquire all the outstanding shares of Yahoo! common stock for per share consideration of $31 representing a total equity value of approximately $44.6 billion. Microsoft’s proposal would allow the Yahoo! shareholders to elect to receive cash or a fixed number of shares of Microsoft common stock, with the total consideration payable to Yahoo! shareholders consisting of one-half cash and one-half Microsoft common stock. The offer represents a 62 percent premium above the closing price of Yahoo! common stock on Jan. 31, 2008"

Betanews also reports, "In its own statement this morning, Yahoo confirmed that it is considering what it characterizes as an unsolicited takeover proposal.

"[The] Board of Directors will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo's strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders," the statement reads."

It's more than just "trying to get ahead of google".

They will also likely "poison the water supply" of google's main business by blitzing the advertising market with lower prices, forcing google to loose income.

They also gain the HUGE online services of Yahoo mail and IM, making it a powerhouse in the IM business, which is a lot more advertising dollars as well. Google's IM network is limited, and AOL is...well, AOL.

They also aquire flickr, HotJobs, GeoCities, and many other stuff. Many of these products can be folder up quickly and easily into "Microsoft Live"....likely within 2 years.

There's also a ton of technologies and talents owned by Yahoo! that Microsoft can make good use of. Yes....some of those talents probably hate Microsoft and will quit, but eh almighty dollar will keep a good amount of them.

I agree but by doing all of those things, Including "poison the water supply" they will be getting the upper hand on goggle.

They will probably also take the unlimited storage of yahoo mail and use it in Hotmail, yahoo messenger features will probably be used in msn or windows messenger.yahoo will probably lose things like yahoo messenger for vista. But the yahoo company also is trying to "maintain Yahoo! as an independent company" unfortunately I don't think Microsoft is going to let that fly!

This issue is one of those things that only time will tell.

p.s. I like your comment about AOL! And your right it is about more than just getting a head of goggle!
